Q: How does one with diabetes treat a glucose overdose?
My friend with diabetes decided to treat herself to more sugar than she actually needed at lunch today. She called me up a few hours later and told me she wasn’t feeling well, and gave me pretty much all of the symptoms of glucose overdose. Does she have to visit the doctor, is there a vitamin or pill she can take to make it go away, what kind of food should she be eating? Is this serious enough that she go to the doctor?
I really need help with this, it’s urgent.

A: You treat a high sugar with medication.
Your friend should know this.

Q: How does everyone afford to treat Diabetes?
I’m asking because my boyfriend is recently diagnosed with Diabetes. The past two months, with all the Metformin, Avandia, Lantus, Novalog, needles, gauze, alcohol, meter strips, etc. We are struggling. His health insurance only provides $1200 gross towards prescriptions PER YEAR. We are very quickly coming up on that $1200 and it hasn’t even been 6 months. I’m curious to know, are we doing something wrong? Why can’t we afford this treatment? It seems like a good many Americans have Diabetes, how does everyone else afford the many prescriptions? We’re freaking out, because we don’t have the money for rent, gas, food, etc. We feel like the Diabetes treatment has to come first, but all these co-pays for specialists and prescriptions has drained our wallets, we can’t buy food, nevermind entertainment. How does everyone else afford this?! What can we do?

A: I am a BSN/RN and I cannot believe some of these answers. You have quite a few good ones from intelligent, helpful people. Then you have Guy R (please see this website about reusing needles. I can’t tell you how many ulcers I have treated on diabetics for this very reason. http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/d_06_341a.htm) telling people it’s ok to reuse your needles. IT ISN’T!

But the most idiotic has to be “doowopper” with an IQ of about 12. Pull your head out of your bottom and educate yourself about diabetes. It is a DISEASE. You can’t just change your diet and make it go away. “i bet that his sugar is out of control”. Do you really know so little about a disease that affects 230 million people worldwide? Please don’t answer any more questions that require your brain to function.

Q: Can the cord blood of an infant be used to cure or treat type 1 diabetes in the infant’s mother?
My wife has type 1 diabetes. We are expecting our first child and have heard many of the wonderous medical miracles of cord blood. But can the cord blood be used by my wife to treat (or even cure) her type 1 diabetes?

A: This is NOT one of the “miracles” of cord blood.

There is some promising research into using stem cells to cure Type 1 diabetes, but that work is still in its infancy, So far, diabetes has been cured with stem cells in a few lab rats. [ADULT stem cells were used, not embryonic stem cells] It is a LONG journey from lab rats to humans! IF this proves effective in humans, the testing, clinical trials, and FDA approval for treatment is still 20-30 years away.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are everywhere we look this time of year. Potassium is found in all foods, especially vegetables and fruit, so it is easy to eat more than your body requires.

Potassium Levels: Normal blood potassium levels for adults are 3.5 to 5.0mmol/L. Critical levels for people on dialysis are 5.5mmol/L or greater.

Here are some tips to keep your potassium level in the normal range:

* Choose 4-5 servings of low and medium potassium foods per day (ask your dietitian for a list of these foods).

* Remember, serving size counts…even if the food is low in potassium, you still need to watch how much you eat. Generally, a 1/2 cup is an appropriate serving size.

* When treating yourself to a high potassium food, only buy enough of the food to make one or two servings. This way, you can’t over do it!

* Cooking some foods, such as potatoes, in large amounts of water allows potassium to move out of the food and into the water. Peel vegetables and cut into small pieces. Boil in a large pot of water. Drain the water after cooking (ask your dietitian about soaking potatoes to further decrease the potassium).

Healthy Eating for People on Dialysis

Adding healthy snacks to your day’s intake can give you extra energy and help you get all the nutrients you need to stay healthy on dialysis. Eating several smaller snack-size meals during the day can be helpful during those times when your appetite is poor. It can also help people with diabetes with their blood sugar control.

Remember to keep your dialysis diet guidelines in mind when planning your snacks ; eat more protein, less salt, potassium, phosphorous and fluid.

Here are a few tips and snack ideas to help you out:

Try a high protein snack to help meet your higher protein needs. Remember to take your phosphorous binder with these snacks.

* Leftover roast meat on a bun
* Hard cheese (1oz.) or peanut butter (1 tbsp.) and unsalted crackers
* Cream cheese on a bagel

Lower potassium fresh fruit or vegetables:

* Grapes
* Apples
* Berries (blueberries, strawberries etc.)
* Cucumber or celery sticks

Choose low salt snacks to help control fluid intake. Salty snacks and foods make you feel thirsty and may cause you to drink more.

* Unsalted popcorn or lower salt tortillas or pretzels
* Rice Krispie squares
* Graham wafers, vanilla wafers
* For more snack ideas and suggestions, ask your Renal Dietitian

Q: How does diabetes affect the body? What course of action can be used to treat/manage diabetes?
What carbs should be avoided and what are the carb pros with diabetes (if any)?

A: Managing your diabetes starts with eating healthy. It is important to monitor your weight if you want to control the effects of diabetes. While having the disease means you have to change the way you eat, you do not have to make sudden changes. You can start by changing the little things in your diet. However, make sure to eat regularly and have the right amount of carbohydrates. Once you established you carbohydrate intake, you can start adjusting the amount of fat you take in. Eat fewer portions and start avoiding salty foods. In changing your diet, taking small steps won’t put you in a diet shock that can be stressful for you.

Eating healthy is just the same for people with diabetes and people without it. Having diabetes does not mean you have to eat different meals with your family and friends. In fact, you can use yourself as example to teach them to eat healthy. As long as you have your meals planned with friendly recipes for diabetes patients, then you can include yourself in planning dinners with your family. Having a personal dietician can also help you in coping with changes in diet to soften the effects of the transition. Reading up on different recipes and online resources are helpful too.

Q: when was the first insulin injection used in India to treat Diabetes?
Mention me the year and the month correctly ! Please!…

A: Mani K,
Ancient Hindu writings (c.1500 BC)mention a mysterious and deadly disease that causes intense thirst, enormous urine output and wasting away of the body. It is attributed to an over indulgence in food and drink. The Ayur Veda records that insects and flies are attracted to the urine of some people and that the urine tastes sweet. Around the same time, the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus recommends those afflicted with the malady go on a diet of fruits, grain and honey which is reputed to stifle the excessive urination. The Indian word for diabetes is madhumeha, “madhu” meaning sweet/sweetness and “meha” excessive urination. Indians have known of this disease for several thousand years. Folklore has it that Ganesha, an important Hindu god with a large human body and the head of an elephant, had madhumeha, as evidenced by his predisposition to eat heavy and sweet foods. The earliest description of madhumeha is found in the Atharvaveda, one of the four sacred Vedas, that dates to around 1500 to 1000 B.C. The etiology, symptomatology, pathology, prognosis, and management principles of diabetes are described in detail by the physician Caraka in the Caraka Samhita. This is the earliest major medical text of Ayurveda, and it reached its present form around the first century A.D. Another term for madhumeha is dhatupaka janya vikruti. The first word, “dhatupaka,” means metabolism. The entire term, roughly translated, means that derangements in body tissues take place due to discrepancies in metabolism. Frederick Grant Banting and Charles H. Best discovered insulin while they were working in the laboratory of John J.R. Macleod at the University of Toronto in 1921. The first successful use of insulin to treat diabetes was 1st january 1922. The patient was Leonard Thompson, who was treated at Toronto General Hospital in Canada. Under normal circumstances, it is made by beta cells that are part of a cluster of hormone-producing cells in the islets of langerhans in the pancreas. Boots the Chemist were manufacturing insulin in India. They opened in Pakistan in the immediate post war years following 1945. In 1965 The Company was incorporated on 15th December. The Company Manufacture `Boots’ brand of medical and pharmaceutical products and agricultural and animal health products. The leading lines of manufacture includes insulin injections, anti-dysentery drugs etc. On 19th October, the Company entered into a technical collaboration agreement with Boots Pure Drug Co. Ltd., England, for manufacturing crystalline insulin and formulations thereof.

Q: What were the side effects of using animal insulin to treat diabetes?
I know 1..immune problems.

Anymore??

A: Immune problems, weight gain, increased site infections, the skin around injections sites get lumpy over time, decreased renal plasma flow, cardiovascular problems, blurry vision, erratic blood sugars are just the few that I know of.
There are lots of side effects with genetically engineered insulin also.

Q: How can you treat diabetes Type 2?
i need know how it works and how it can be helped?

A: This is too big a question to be answered in this space because it does not address any individual concerns or problems that you may have.
The first thing is to treat it seriously. I have seen too many people deny the disease and wind up with problems like loss of eyesight (and job when it involves driving), amputations and dialysis. With type 3 diabetes (brittle diabetes) the insulin levels are wonky because the pancreas will start to work for no apparent reason and blood sugar levels do very weird things. These people are far more prone to complications than the rest of the population.
In general, it involves weight loss and eating a healthy diet. Exercise is a key component as well. Drugs may be involved as well.
If you want more information, read the book “Diabesity” by Dr. Kaufmann or go to the diabetes assocation web site.

Q: How does a person with diabetes treat erectile dysfunction?

A: Viagra helps stimulate neurotransmitters, so if you still have some working, Viagra may help you. However, diabetes breaks down the brain to neurotransmitter pathways, so eventually the pathways will deteriorate and Viagra will not help you. Neither will Paparverine. Others will lie to you, even other male diabetics saying “Not me, it won’t happen to me. I watch my diet, blah blah blah. I’ve got great wood.” The truth is, it happens to all male diabetics. Here is the straight talk. If you want a permanent solution, get a bionic implant. There is nothing better. It will change your life, and you can become a porn star if you wish, like me.

The general route is to try the drugs first. Then proceed to surgery after they fail, and they will. Good luck.

Q: How does Gila monster venom help treat diabetes?

A: Byetta is based on Gila monster spit and works by signaling your pancreas to kick out extra insulin and reduce your appetite.

Mom’s comment was not very nice.

Q: Has anyone used cinnamon to treat their diabetes?
I know water soluable Cinnulin pf should be used, and if you were successful how much did you take and how long before you saw any signs of improvement? Thank you, I`m trying to help my spouse as much as possible BEYOND exercise and diet.

A: cinnamon as a treatment for diabetes is a myth. it is a good dietary aid, and may help to decrease spikes in your blood sugars, but it does not control your blood sugars, nor is it a replacement for any meds. This improvement that people see only works on type II diabetics, not a type I because of the insulin production. Because a type II is still making insulin the cinnamon can help al ittle since the insulin is put into the digestive system from the pancreas, however because a type I is taking shots, the insulin is absorbed elsewhere and cannot be helped by cinnamon.

Q: How to treat patient with Diabetes and TB, and what diet to follow?
I need to deal with a family member who is both Diabetic and has tuberculosis, at the same time with having high blood pressure from time to time. She is late 40’s and has previous breast surgery. She’s taking medicine now, given by a local Internist. But our problem is how to handle her food intake and what precautionary measures to follow, so that she’d know what to do in case of emergency.

A: The McDougall plan is quite simply the healthiest diet on the planet. It is fashioned after the diets and lifestyles used by the the people who typically live the longest and are the healthiest on the planet…. the rural Asian populations. Civilizations that rarely see breast cancer, diabetes, circulatory disease, etc. This diet gives the body what it needs to maximize the immune system while minimizing the bad things. I’ve lost forty pounds while on it, blood sugar is much easier to manage, and I feel great. Read more here: http://www.drmcdougall.com

A great supplement to the McDougall plan, one that will help you understand diabetes better, is this book:

to lower blood glucose the leaves of the mullberry tree?

A: I have been in the medical business for 26 years and this is a new one. I don’t think this would have any affect on diabetes.

Q: What happens if you dont treat diabetes?

A: Well what do you think? That is why they call it DIE-abetes!! haha, but seriously you will die. My cousin work in the part of the hospital where they send the body parts after they are amputated. I visited there one time and I would have to say about half were amputated due to diabetes. It was gross to see a BLACK foot, or toe. One person was a double amputee, due to diabetes. (both legs) That would totally suck, so that is why I treat my diabetes!!! : )
