Q: I have crippling headaches and OTC medicine is not working, how do I get pain medication?
I’m young, and usually when young people are asking for pain medication it is so they can get high or sell it. But I have been suffering from horrible headaches for the past year and excedrin, ibuprofen, aspirin, tylenol, advil, any of those DONT WORK. I have tried something called dilauded and that helped a lot. But I don’t want my doctor thinking im a pill popper. How do I go about asking for pain medication?

A: Go in, tell him/her you’ve been suffering from really bad headaches and the only thing that helped is dilauded and ask if they can prescribe it. It’s that simpple. They won’t think you’re a pill popper, they’ll just think you’ve got a problem and want a solution. Doctors aren’t there to judge you

Q: How strong of a pain medication did you get after Groin Hernia Surgery?
I was just wondering what pain medication you got after yous and if you could drive or able to maintain a house while on them

A: there is little pain after it. Just a higher risk of tearing the wound. You will be told all about that.and the effect of the surgery are instant and very good.

Q: What’s the strongest over-the-counter pain medication that can be used to relief toothache which is not a gel?
What’s the strongest over-the-counter pain medication out there that can be used to relief toothache without having to smear a gel like Oralgel or similar around the affected area? Are there any pills which work well for the relief of toothache?

A: 151 proof rum.

I’m not kidding. Most over the counter pain meds aren’t going to help a toothache. You can try ibuprofen or Tylenol, but I’m betting you won’t get much relief.

An alcoholic beverage is much more likely to provide relief for several reasons. One is that the alcohol itself will soothe the inflammed area around the tooth while it is inside your mouth. Secondly, it is a natural pain inhibitor and will release enzymes in your brain that will block the pain radiating from your tooth.

Before the advent of modern pain medications, alcohol was used frequently to deaden pain for minor surgeries including pulling teeth that were rotted or decayed.

If getting drunk as a skunk doesn’t appeal to you, you can go to the emergency room on a weekend (or an emergency dental clinic) for pain medication. If you are in severe pain, it is likely you have an abcess or infection in the tooth and should be treated with an antibiotic anyway–which you also can’t get over the counter.

Good luck and sorry about your pain. Hope it gets better.

Q: Have you decided if you are using pain medication for labor delivery?
If so, what option did you decide and why?

If you are not using pain medication, what brought you to that decision and what are you doing to prepare?

A: Do you have dental work done with no Novocaine? How about surgery with no anesthetic? I just don’t agree with medical science trying to make women feel bad about receiving pain medication during childbirth! Have your epidural. You are going to have a lot to deal with once this wonderful blessing is here. Take care of yourself, so you will be able to take great care of this beautiful child. And don’t feel guilty!

Q: How do they check pain medication levels?
My huband is in pain management and he wants to know how they check medication levels

A: What type of pain medication? Opioids I assume?

Doctors don’t check medication levels except for a few specific drugs that are dosed based upon the concentration in the blood (ie nortriptyline, phenytoin, lithium). And if a person died they might do massive tests to determine concentration of a drug but that is really the only time they might look.

In most reputable pain management practices they will do random drug tests, normally testing for dozens of drugs to insure there is medication compliance and to make sure extra drugs are not being used. So if your husband is prescribed morphine and they detect morphine and hydrocodone there will be concern. Or if they don’t detect any medication there will also be a problem.

Q: Do they usually give you pain medication after an extraction?
I’m getting 2 teeth extracted today(not wisdom teeth the teeth in front where the wisdom tooth were one on top & one on bottom).Do you think the will give me some pain medication?
i just want to get those 2 teeth out there cavity full.

A: i doubt it, you will have anesthesia administered during the procedure, and afterwards they will definitely tell you to hold ice packs on your cheeks to prevent pain and swelling. but you can ask your dentist. im sure he’ll give you a prescription or recommend an OTC treatment.

Q: Can you give a cat childrens pain medication?
I heard this somewhere and I am not sure if its true? If not, where can you get inexpensive pain medication.. walmart or petco? Thanks!

A: Ask your vet before giving him anything. Cats are VERY sensitive to drugs and chemicals and can’t handle a lot of the drugs that dogs can. Aspirin is poisonous to cats.

Q: What pain medication and antibiotics cannot be taken with the following medication allergies?
If someone has an allergy to penicillin can they take percocet, vicodin and/or tylenol #3? Which antibiotics CANNOT be taken with a penicillin allergy?

If someone is allergic to CODEINE, which prescription pain medications can they NOT take? Which antibiotics CANNOT be taklen with a codeine allergy?

A: An allergy to penicillin doesn’t preclude the use of analgesics.

If the patient has a true, type 1 hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin, then ALL beta-lactams must be avoided.

A type 1 hypersensitivity reaction, IgE mediated, is rare with opioids. The following is taken directly from LexiComp, “Immediate reactions to opioids have been documented extensively; however, it appears the majority of reactions are not mediated by specific IgE, and therefore, distinctions in chemical structure are not generally relevant to decisions on cross-sensitivity. Pharmacologically-mediated reactions such as histamine release are influenced by individual characteristics, including the concentration and potency of the selected agent”. These reactions are usually caused by histamine released systemically from destabilized mast cells and can be controlled by administering an antihistamine.

I don’t know of any antibiotic that cannot be taken if the patient is ‘allergic’ to codeine.

In either case, it must be determined if this is an anaphylactoid reaction or an anaphylactic reaction.

Q: How much postoperative pain medication is typically prescribed following routine wisdom teeth extraction?
I am about to have my wisdom teeth removed because one is partially impacted and another is partially erupted with the gum grown over it. I am slightly concerned about pain afterwards because honestly my threshold is pretty low. Does the Dentist/Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon usually prescribe enough medications for only the first 24 hours or for a few days. Thanks.

A: I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out and I was prescribed 20 Vicodin afterwards. But he told me to call if I needed more or if the pain persisted. They lasted for a few days although at first I had to take 2 at a time. Good luck to you!

Q: When using a pain medication such as Vikadin, if you get pulled over, are you illegally under the influence?
When using a pain medication such as Vikadin, if you get pulled over, are you illegally under the influence?

My mother is afraid of driving, because she has Lupus; and she is always on pain medication. Can anyone give me some information; thanks…

A: Only if it impairs your driving ability.

Q: My pain medication is making me sleepy and groggy, but I have to be at work. What else can I take?
I had seven teeth pulled on Monday and I went back to work on Wednesday. The problem is that when I talk on the phone (which is part of my job) my jaws get sore and my gums begin to feel swollen again. I take my pain pills, as prescribed, but they make me so sleepy and I feel drugged an hour or so after taking them. I am taking 500 mg of hydrocodone with acetaminophen in it. You are supposed to take them every 4 to 6 hours as needed. The instructions clearly tell you not to drive while taking the medication, but I have to be at work. I really didn’t want to take off a whole week because I had some teeth removed. What else can I take that won’t make me so sleepy?

Yesterday I tried to go all day without taking a pain pill. I took one first thing yesterday morning but after feeling drugged I decided to wait until I got home. By the time I got home the entire left side of my face felt swollen and it was hurting. I need to pain the go away but I can’t function at work.
Correction on the last sentence – I need the pain to go away.

A: take the day off from work. it is nothing worst than being at work and in pain. it is miserable.

best advise–call in sick.

Q: Can narcotic pain medication be the cause of swelling in my legs?
It seems every time I’m on narcotic pain medication for any length of time my legs swell really bad, i can push in and it stays for a bit. Does anyone know why this is so?
Also could this be any kind of a sign of liver damage?

A: Yes, your medication can cause this. It could be the sign of serious allergic reaction. I suggest you contact your doctor ASAP. If you have trouble breathing or are feverish, dizzy..call 911

Q: How am I supposed to know if I have a dry socket, if I’m on pain medication?
I know that if you have dry socket, you are supposed to have bad pain, and a bad taste or bad small. I’m taking pain medication to ease the pain though, so does dry socket hurt even through the medication?
Also, I have a bump on one of the areas where they removed a tooth. Is that from a piece of bone working it’s way out? It hurts!

A: yes you will know, a dry socket us painful and you will feel the pain from your jaw to your ear or down your neck depending whether you had your top or bottom wisdom teeth pulled. You will also notice swelling and you will have a bad taste in your mouth along w/ bad breath.

Q: will i be able to take pain medication after my wisdom tooth removal if i am allergic to codeine?
I’m having my wisdom teeth out next week and I’m allergic to codeine, is there any other kind of pain medication they can give me?

A: Your surgeon will likely prescribe Hydrocodone instead of Codeine since you are allergic. Technically, hydro’s are synthetic formulations of codeine, but most people who have your allergy are able to take them. Just make sure you have someone with you the first couple of times that you need to take them. This way, if something happens and you are also allergic to the hydrocodone, they can take you into the ER for treatment and get you a different med. All people react differently to medications and you may be sensitive to opiates. It is not uncommon, especially if you have never had them before, or on a very limited basis. Do not drive while you are taking them or take any additional Tylenol. After you get your wisdom teeth out, make sure you have an ice pack, or two, in the freezer to place on your cheeks. This will help with the swelling and the pain as well. If you follow all of the doctor’s instructions about after care, you should be feeling much better within a couple of days and will not need the prescription pain relievers anymore.
